MAG is pleased to announce the successful completion of demining operations in the Čelić municipality, recently marked by a ceremony celebrating this important milestone in the 'Majevica Without Mines' project.
The project, which began in July 2022 and concluded in March 2025, has been instrumental in improving safety across the region. Čelić is now the second municipality in the Majevica area – following Ugljevik – where clearance activities have been fully completed under this initiative. This achievement brings Čelić closer to being officially declared mine-impact free, providing increased safety and new opportunities for local communities.

Beyond protecting citizens, the project plays a vital role in the region’s recovery. Demining supports the development of the local economy and tourism by enabling the renovation of homes, revitalising agricultural activities, and restoring the landscape. It represents a crucial stage in reconstruction, creating conditions for sustainable economic growth and infrastructure development.
The clearance of the final mine-suspected areas represents meaningful progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national efforts to eliminate the threat posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war.

This project was generously funded by the Federal Republic of Germany through the German Federal Foreign Office, whose commitment to humanitarian mine action continues to make safe futures possible for thousands.
Bernhard Abels, Deputy Ambassador of Germany to Bosnia and Herzegovina, said: "Since 2022, Germany has spent 9.7 million euros on the 'Majevica Without Mines' project. I am happy to see how well our money is being used and that this is another step towards a mine-impact free Bosnia and Herzegovina."
Enis Horozović, Director of Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Center (BHMAC), said: "In the past 30 years, we have released more than 80% of mine-suspected areas. The completion of these projects also brings Bosnia and Herzegovina closer to fulfilling its obligations under the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction. We are grateful to the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany for its long-standing support in the demining process."

Pauline Boyer, MAG Country Director in Bosnia and Herzegovina, says: “The initiative from the five Majevica municipalities to work hand-in-hand to promote sustainable development, employment opportunities for the youth, and reconciliation among communities sets a powerful example. It has been an honour for MAG to contribute to making it possible."
The official declaration of mine-impact-free status for Čelić is expected in the coming weeks.
