What types of staff does MAG employ?
In MAG programmes, we employ only a small number of international staff. More than two-thirds of these are technical experts, who provide the expertise to allow MAG to train and supervise the national staff we employ to undertake demining and stockpile destruction or management work. This is in line with our aim to build a safe and skilled local capacity to deal with areas affected by remnants of conflict. Our staff therefore have substantial experience and technical knowledge of landmines and unexploded ordnance in order to safely train and supervise others.

We also employ Country Directors, Programme Officers, Finance Managers, Base Managers, Logisticians and Community Liaison staff – these posts are again responsible for training and developing local staff in their own areas of expertise (people management, finance systems, donor liaison and management, logistics, community development etc).
Does MAG have volunteering opportunities?
UK:
We do have some opportunities for volunteers at our HQ in Manchester City Centre, UK. If you would be interested in volunteering with our Public Fundraising team, you can contact Jen Birch, Public Fundraising Assistant at jennifer.birch@maginternational.org. MAG will also occasionally announce volunteer opportunities on the vacancies page of our website.
International:
MAG does not use volunteers in our programmes. This is because, in line with our capacity building objectives, MAG’s programmes aim for local ownership of all functions by employing and training local staff to allow them to contribute, in the broadest sense, to the rehabilitation of their own country. In addition to demining training, MAG provides national staff with vocational skills that will help to support them upon completion of humanitarian mine action activities. Employing international volunteers overseas would restrict the number of opportunities for local staff to be employed by MAG.
Does MAG offer internships?
UK:
MAG does run an internship scheme at our Manchester HQ. Interns are asked to contribute a minimum of two days a week, though preferably more, for a period of six months. During this time, interns provide administrative, editorial, research and programmatic support to the Operations and Business Development Departments, spending three months in each department. The internship is unpaid and MAG reimburses reasonable incidental expenses.
MAG’s internship is an excellent opportunity for people looking to start their career in International Development. Internships are advertised on the vacancies page.
International:
MAG does occasionally offer international internship placements. Internships will vary in length, location and type. Details of any internships will be available on the vacancies page of the MAG website when they arise.
Does MAG train people to deal with explosive remnants of conflict?
While MAG is focused on providing relevant training for national staff in its programmes, unfortunately we do not have the capacity to provide Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)/demining training for International people looking to enter this field of work. Applicants for International vacancies need to have relevant, transferable skills and experience in order to be considered for international technical vacancies.
MAG’s Technical Field Managers (TFMs) manage and coordinate ordnance clearance operations in our overseas programmes. As well as possessing relevant EOD qualifications, TFMs are required to demonstrate previous experience of working in mine clearance, EOD, Small Arms and Light Weapons and/or Physical Security and Stockpile Management operations in developing countries.
Does MAG offer work experience placements?
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to accommodate work placements at our HQ in the UK, or in our overseas programmes.
